Hi everyone,
Just a little question:
We could all go on for an indefinable amount of time elaborating, in ever increasing lines of metaphorical expressions, about the wonders of AALCC's cinematic achievements; the soundtrack was merely sublime, the visuals were stunning; all of that stuff, & yes, oh how true it would be.
But what I've been wondering, in fact racking my brain for days about, is: Does anyone know of any film's which rivale AALCC for its visual beauty & etherial audio? I'm not sure there is one, but if there is, I'd really like to know about it.

I was getting high off the Ether before I even heard of Lily Chou-Chou, then I found her, or she found me. At that moment her Ether reached out to mine, sending ripples through my soul with her music. From then on I swore to uphold the purity of the Ether, with Lily as my guiding light.

I don't know one film who have the same music/pictures etc... I think it's really hard to find it.
Huuum, maybe you should see Harmful Insect (or Gaichu)...

Thanks, I'll have to check it out on amazon & see what I think. I loved AALCC so much it would be great if I could find anything else even remotely similar. I do think that AALCC sets a high standard which would be hard to rival, but I'll check out the film you mentioned & see what I think. Thanks once again,

I don't know if there's really any film which can rival AALCC for it's general mood and atmosphere, but it's definitely worth checking out some stuff by Hideaki Anno if you like Shunji Iwai's work. I watched the film Shiki-Jitsu [Ritual] yesterday, and I'd really recommend it to any fan of AALCC. Other than the fact that it's directed by Anno, it also features Shunji Iwai in the main role. I think the two films are similar in their approach - both films seem to meander along and show the gaps between the main events nicely.

Hi starcorea, thanks for replying to my post. I'll have to check some of his films out, especially the one you recommended. Umm, Hideaki Anno... I've heard that name somewhere before, can't think where though; the internet no doubt Also the title 'Shiki-Jitsu' translating to 'Ritual' peeks my interest somewhat, I'm intrigued, its gonna get added to my list of "movies to get" for sure. Thanks once again

Swallowtail Butterfly is another good movie from Iwai. They don't have much in common but they are also similar in a way.

Blue Spring reminded me of AALCC in some ways, not that the two are very much alike, or should be compared. But both of them are about bullying and have a sad endings. Also the music in Blue Spring isn't like in Lily Chou-Chou at all but it is rather interesting. And if you are interested also in other sad asian movies, try Nobody knows, Samaria (and anything by Kim Ki-Duk), This World Of Ours, Kids Return, Love Exposure, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance or Strange Circus (I don't really know why am I recommending the last two as neither of them have anything to do with teenage life whatsoever, but they are great and are really worth watching).

maybe these films don't rival Lily Chou Chou but some of you may like them? The Four Hundred Blows, Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, Gregory's Girl, Melody Fair, a.k.a Melody, The Red Balloon, Small Change, Golden Demon,

I don't think a film exists with a soundtrack that can rival AALCCs.
The soundtrack and the visuals can't compare, but storywise I highly recommend "告白" (kokuhaku, confessions). Twisting, compelling, and chilling story that is among my favorite movies ever, not just Japanese movies either.
My favorite ever non-Japanese film has to be "Children of Men". Absolutely the most moving and realistic movie I've ever seen, the director is a genius.

With every film I take away a new experience. Perhaps these films don't rival AALCC, but they have made a huge impact on me. Maybe you will enjoy them as much as I have.
Bright Future, Last Life in the Universe, and Tokyo Sonata
All of these films dance with loneliness in their own way, along with finding their path in life, their own ether.
You may also want to check out Suicide Circle, while the film is extremely different in terms of genre, the main plot and "feel" of the movie is very similar to AALCC, if in a much more radical way.

Not in the traditional sense of anime... I've enjoyed a few Studio Ghibli movies which are technically "Japanese animation", but aren't what most consider anime. I'm not against it either though, I've just never really had the time or opportunity to watch any. What are your favorites, in case I suddenly run into mounds of free time?

I can find time to enjoy some, but I'm not a huge fan. I've always loved Cowboy Bebop, FLCL, Welcome to the NHK, etc. What would you suggest? You guys should watch Paprika if you haven't alredy, great movie.
